TUMPEK PENGATAG AS ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION
“TUMPEK PENGATAG AS ENVIRONMENTAL
PRESERVATION”
Indonesia is an
archipelago consisting of many islands and has various tribes, languages,
customs or what we often call the culture of one of the islands of Bali.
Cultural diversity in Bali is a proof that Indonesia is a country rich in
culture. We cannot deny whether regional culture is a more global main factor,
which we usually call national culture. So, on the basis of all forms of
regional culture will greatly affect the national culture, as well as the
culture of the local; will be very well-behaved towards local culture. So the
cultural diversity of Bali custom makes Bali become famous with its cultural
uniqueness. Culture is a very valuable wealth because in addition to the
characteristics of a region also become a symbol of the personality of a nation
or region. Various kinds of Balinese culture are our predecessors. Since
culture is the richness and characteristic of a region, then maintaining,
caring and preserving culture is an obligation of every individual, in other
words culture becomes a wealth that must be maintained and preserved by each
tribe (Wikipedia, 2017).
Bali has many
unique but sacred traditions, such as Tumpek
Pengatag celebration, Tumpek pengatag
is often called Tumpek bubuh / tumpek wariga, Tumpek pengatag is believed by the Hindu people as the day of
environmental preservation, where Hindu people believe that the feast day can
neutralize the universe especially the environment to become more sustainable,
fertile and can increase income from nature.
In every Saniscara Kliwon Wariga, Hindus always
present the offerings to Sanghyang
Sangkara as the God of all plants. On this day set and given the name Tumpek Pengarah, Tumpek Penguduh / uduh, Tumpek
Pengatag, Tumpek Bubuh by Hindus
is a spark of their heart that deeply describes his love and affection to the
plants. Since Hindus realize that in living there life in this world cannot
stand alone (individual) but always need someone else as a friend to navigate their
life up to the ultimate goal, then that human is called as a social creature. Since
humans always need other people as friends then came the concept in Hinduism
called Tri Hita Karana which
lexically means three causes of well-being. (Tri = three, Hita = prosperous, Karana
= cause). In essence, Tri Hita Karana
contains understanding of three causes of welfare is sourced from the harmony
of the relationship between: Man with his God. man with his natural environment,
and man with his neighbor (Wiana, 2005).
Then, human
relations with the environment arise Hindu thinking to be established as a
feast called Tumpek Pengatag or Tumpek Uduh. In the acclaimed Tumpek Penguduh is Sang Hyang Shiva as Bhatara
Sangkara as the ruler of plants, which causes plants to multiply, leaf,
flower, fruitful fruit in accordance with its usefulness. Performing worship
addressed to Bhatara Sangkara then
used the object is the plants most closely related to humans used in the
necessities of everyday life such as: coconut tree, mango tree, wani tree, durian
tree, guava tree and so on. This day reminds the man that the feast of Galungan will come in 25 days, and then
all the preparations to welcome and celebrate the feast of Galungan have begun. The aim of the Hindus to raise the ceremony
today is to express gratitude to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa in the manifestation
as Bhatara Sangkara that he has
created the plants and begged for them to breed well and be useful to humans.
Simultaneously also pleaded for good and many fruitful plants so that when Galungan approaches to be used as a
means of offering ceremony in Galungan
feast. In general, this ceremony is done in the yard / plantation, moor that
many maintained trees that are useful for human life (Murdaka, 2015).
Tumpek pengatag is the decline of Hyang Ciwa to maintain the harmony of
life in the world. Celebration of tumpek
wariga is 25 days before Galungan
Day aiming to the tree / grow plants that exist around us are expected to meet
the needs of his people, like growing plants, leaves and flowers. In Hindu
conception, when Tumpek Pengatag
presented offerings to Ida Sang Hyang
Widhi Wasa in manifestation as Sangkara,
the Lord of Plant Rulers concreted through a tree ceremony. Indeed, according
to the Balinese literary tradition, which causes the living plants and yields
to humans, is Hyang Sangkara.
Therefore, thanksgiving and respect for the Sangkara
Hyang must be done by loving all kinds of plants.
Celebration of Tumpek Pengatag Day teaches mankind that
we must be grateful for the harmony that helps us to live in the realm of life
now. Respecting and appreciating the earth and its inherent, especially the
existing plants, signals and profound meaning that humans love and cherish
nature and the environment that has contributed to sustaining life and livelihood.
In Tumpek Pengatag, the momentum of
love and affection to nature is directed to the plants. How big the role of
plants in giving life to mankind. Almost all the necessities of human life are
sourced from plants.
Living things
come from food. Food comes from plants. Plants come from rain. The rain comes
from yadnya. Yadnya is karma. Without herbs, all living beings can not live
their lives, because the basic ingredients of animal and human foods are
plants. The existence of plants is yadnya
from earth and heaven to all living things (Putri, 2009).
Humans as the
greediest creatures often do unfair to the balance of life of these plants. To
cultivate a fair and loving attitude to the plants, Hindus begged the guidance
of God Sangkara as a manifestation of
the Almighty God. Therefore, Hindus in India have "Sangkara Puja Day," while Hindus in Bali have Tumpek Wariga as the day to worship the
God of Sangkara.
The outer
packaging of the Sangkara Puja
celebrations in India and the Tumpek
Wariga day in Bali is certainly different, but the meaning is no different.
Both days as a sacred ritual process to remind mankind to always ask God's
guidance in developing and protecting plants as the most important source of
food for living beings.
In celebration
or idol often spoken by the ancestors is "Nini
Nini, buin selae dina galungan. Mabuah apang nged ... nged ... nged.
"As I Made Wita uttered while knocking a machete in the right hand on a
flowering guava tree. He gave a little wound to the stem. The same thing in cempaka, belimbing, srikaya, kenanga, and a number of other plants in
the yard at the celebration of Tumpek Wariga.
"Grandma-Grandma,
25 days Galungan. Be fruitful for
dense ... bushy ... bushy ..., "so meaning Balinese sentence is always
spoken on this celebration. That day thanksgiving to God for the fertility of
plants to grow well and produce fruit or dense flowers, (Erviani, 2017).
Thus, in truth,
the celebration of Tumpek Pengatag
day gives a deep gesture and meaning so that people love and love nature and
the environment that has contributed to sustain life and livelihood. In Tumpek Pengatag, the momentum of love
and affection to nature is directed to the plants. How big the role of plants
in giving life to mankind. Almost all the necessities of human life are sourced
from plants, starting from food, clothing to the board.
So that, Pengumpagg Tumpek ceremony is a local
wisdom of Bali that is beneficial for the preservation of the environment,
especially in the preservation of plants. Besides, Tumpek Pengatag ceremony is also closely related to the value of
Ecology, Social society and economic value. In this paper, the author expects
that the next generation or the youth in Bali and the Indonesian people in
general are able to preserve local wisdom in each region so as not to be lost
swallowed by the times. It is expected local wisdom is used with the best to support
human life in the future.

greediest creatures often do unfair to the balance of life of these plants. To
cultivate a fair and loving attitude to the plants, Hindus begged the guidance
of God Sangkara as a manifestation of
the Almighty God.
